Item Description
This pair of black sapphires shows a prized rarity in gemstones - the optical phenomena called asterism, also known as star sapphires. Black star sapphires are especially unusual, even amongst Sri Lankan corundums. Star sapphires are nearly always cut as cabochons, since the rounded dome of this cut best highlights the rays of the stars. This pair is a bit uneven, weighing 4.2 and 2.8 cts, with material left on the back to create an even face-up appearance. These are assumed natural, though it's possible there was minor heat treatment on this specimen.
