Madagascar is host to an astonishing variety of tourmaline! Madagascar tourmalines are especially admired for their deep, wine hues in cut stones. Tourmalines come in a range of colors due to mineral impurities within, and to how they form in complex environments: blue (often but not always due to a variety of divalent iron and sometimes copper), pink and red (due to manganese), green (chromium and vanadium) and brown (trivalent iron) - and then things get complicated from there and lead to all the mixed colors we love in wearable and collector quality gems. This is a brilliantly burgundy colored gem (all natural color!) in a cushion cut. It is lightly included which is actually a good thing here, as that indicates no heating, and a natural origin, and it is very bright and impressive in the hand. Photos cannot do justice to the rich, gorgeous color of these tourmalines. The excellent and balanced size makes this perfect as the centerpiece of any gem collection simply on its own merit, or useful for a custom jewelry setting.
