Item Description
This large, 18.53 carat opal high-dome cabochon gemstone is known for its colorful play of light called “opalescence.” While opal is technically a mineraloid, not a mineral, it makes for lovely gemstones. It is a form of hydrated silicon dioxide and is usually translucent or transparent. The remarkable opals from Ethiopia remain extremely popular and for good reason. This large example is a nicely-polished, oval shaped double cabochon with a highly translucent cream-like body color showing a nice play-of-color across both sides of the stone, whereas sometimes opals can show unevenness, with brighter and duller areas of color play. Being one of the traditional birthstones for October, is a bonus. A large stone from modern finds, Ethiopian opals offer a great value compared to many Australian and traditional older locations. This fine gem would look great mounted. Untreated stone. (N)
