Peridot in Meteorite

Item Description

This is the so-called gemstone from space, transparent to translucent frozen crystals of peridot (more widely known as the gem species peridot to nonscientists, then by its rock group naming as olivine). This one comes from famous the Seymchan pallasite finds in Russia, and this slice of meteorite features bright, silvery iron-nickel matrix with mossy-yellow green olivenite (peridot) within. While this piece hasn't been specifically analyzed, Seymchan meteorite slices, such as this, often also contain troilite, kamacite, taenite, and schreibersite. 42 carats, or about 8.4 grams. No treatment. Interestingly, although found in 1967, the peridot within was not found until later, per Wikipedia as quoted here: "During a new expedition in 2004, Dmitri Kachalin recovered about 50 kilograms (110 lb) of new material. Remarkably, about 20% of the new specimens were found to contain olivine crystals,[2] and so revealed the silicated nature of the meteorite. The pallasitic structure was not previously discovered during studies on small metal-only sections of the original mass. Seymchan is considered a stable and rust-resistant pallasite."
