Tanzanite

Tanzanite is a relatively new gemstone, having only been discovered in 1967. It owes its name to the single source of its origin in Tanzania. Unfortunately, the supply will possibly be mined out within the next 30 years and it is therefore termed a generational stone in the gem industry. The gem is famous for its pleochroism, or displaying hues of red, blue, and violet depending on the viewing angle. However, the deep royal blues rival sapphire in their intensity of color. Tanzanite used for matched jewelry and most retail merchandise does require heat to enhance the desired colors of blue and purple, a standard treatment as is the case with this stone. This cushion cut gem is on the smaller size for the material, but it is extremely bright and showy, which is unusual in this size. The color is tremendous, and all together a perfect gem for a ring or necklace by itself or with accent stones. Tanzanite is the modern birthstone for December. (H)
