The Mozambique deposits of tourmaline are renowned for their wonderfully gemmy tourmalines. More recently, stones from Mozambique have become harder to find as the historic locality has not been producing as it once had. This custom brilliant cut gem shows a medium-saturation and an evenly distributed silvery-blue color that is simply dazzling, and easy to see in normal lighting without being too dark. It was cut to produce the largest possible gem with this glorious color, and therefore the gem is understandably “windowed,” meaning you can see through the bottom and not as much light is reflected as if it were cut to be smaller. It is therefore wearable in a setting designed to work with this, or simply more interesting to the collector who wants a larger stone. It really has an undeniable presence, even among other fine tourmalines in this auction. Standard heat treatment only is noted, which can enhance a color in tourmaline. (H)
