Tourmaline Slices (teal!)

The range of color-zoning in tourmaline is simply amazing, and among the most intriguing of fashioned gems are polished “slices.” That is, the lapidarist showcases the dramatic juxtaposition of colors by taking a horizontal slice of a tourmaline crystal and polishing both sides to allow light through. This bold and beautiful pair of polished slices shows striking blue colors — a rich teal core, with a layer of denim-blue, followed by layers of white and pink, and then ending with a teal rind. Unlike many of these specimens, both slices are thick enough for jewelry use (custom bezels should work well). A true gemological wonder and fabulous conversation piece! Heated to enhance color. (H)
