Only a small amount of fine Tsavorite crystals are found each year and many of these are no more than chippings. Tsavorite is a deep-green (due to trace vanadium or chromium) gem variety of grossular garnet that was discovered in Tanzania in 1967 and is often referred to as the king of colored garnets for its beauty and rarity in the world. It is not found outside of a narrow range in Africa. Tsavorite has always been a rare and valuable gemstone that often rivals the color of the best emeralds. This charming pear cut gem, at just shy of 1 carat, has the rich color for which the material is famous and would grade highly on a quality spectrum. It is well suited for a custom jewelry project, as attractive green gems are continually fashionable and in high demand. Untreated with natural color, these stones usually sell for several thousand dollars per carat at this size. (N)
