Watermelon Tourmaline Slices

Tourmaline's range of color-zoning is simply amazing, and among the most popular are the pink and green combinations called “watermelon tourmalines.” An effective way to capture this dramatic juxtaposition of colors is to take a horizontal slice of one of these crystals and polish both sides to allow light through. As with this choice and untreated matched pair, the result is a striking display of rich green “core” surrounded by lush pinky-orange, white, green and another layer of white. And unlike many of these specimens, both slices are thick enough for jewelry use (custom bezels should work well). A true gemological wonder! (N)
